We have good news. HefPro is now officially accredited to provide Code 95 refresher training. Our refresher day "Safe working with forklift and reach truck" has been approved and registered with the CBR, which means professional drivers can take a full refresher day with us that counts towards their Code 95. A good moment to explain what Code 95 actually is, who is required to have it, and why our training is a little different from most.

What is Code 95?

Code 95 is the endorsement on a driving licence that shows a professional driver is professionally competent. Anyone who drives a lorry professionally — a category C or CE licence — needs this code to be allowed to do the work. It isn't something you obtain once and then forget: to keep the code valid, a driver must take periodic refresher training. In total this comes to 35 hours of refresher training every five years, built up from individual course days.

The idea behind this requirement is that the profession changes and that knowledge needs to be kept up to date. Legislation, safety insights, techniques and working methods evolve, and the refresher training ensures drivers keep pace. So it isn't a formality, but a way to maintain professional competence throughout an entire career.

Who is our training for?

Our refresher day is primarily intended for professional drivers with a valid category C or CE licence who want to build up their Code 95 hours. For them, after successful completion, we register seven refresher hours — a full course day within the mandatory 35-hour programme.

But the training is more broadly accessible. Employees without a category C or CE licence can take part too. For them, the day counts as professional training in safe working with internal transport, without Code 95 registration. That way, as a company you can upskill your drivers and your other logistics staff in a single day, each with the outcome that suits their situation.

What makes our Code 95 day different?

Most Code 95 refresher training is about driving on public roads. There's nothing wrong with that in itself, but for many drivers the real risk isn't on the motorway. It's on the company site, during loading and unloading, at the moments when they work with or alongside internal transport equipment. That's exactly what our training focuses on.

Our refresher day centres on the professional driver functioning safely during work: loading and unloading, working on company sites, driving with and around forklifts and reach trucks, and working together with colleagues in a busy logistics environment. Participants learn to recognise risks, assess their own behaviour and act more safely in situations they encounter every day. That ties in far more directly with their actual practice than a general driving lesson.

What does the day look like?

The training lasts seven hours and consists of a combination of theory, practice and assessment. In the theory part we cover, among other things, safety as the driver's responsibility, the causes of accidents, laws and regulations, risk recognition, stability and the load chart, and safe working around lorries and docks. In the practical part each participant gets hands-on — at least two and a half hours of driving time per person, supervised by our instructor. The day concludes with a theory exam and an individual practical assessment.

Because we work in small groups, every participant gets enough attention and practice time. Not a class of twenty where you join the back of the queue, but a day in which you really learn something.
